For many, the sunset symbolizes an ending or the closing of a chapter. However, artists often view it as a beginning. While daytime is filled with tasks and chores, the night is a time for introspection and creation—a time to connect with our true selves. This could be part of the meaning behind “Sunset,” Terra Spencer’s new album. To me, it certainly fits that mold.
Spencer is known for her collaborations. Her 2022 release, “Old News,” was a joint project with Ben Caplan. In “Sunset,” seven of the twelve tracks feature guest appearances. While Spencer doesn’t stay out of the spotlight for long, these collaborations enrich the album, offering a diversity of voices and moods. Though the album is often contemplative and features soft sounds, there’s never a dull moment.
Sonically, the opening track, “Seventeen,” evokes memories of Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell’s best years. Spencer’s composition skills shine as she surpasses listener expectations. “Real Love” showcases Ian Sherwood’s complementary vocals and saxophone work, fitting the song as perfectly as a beloved pair of shoes. “Valentine Blue,” featuring The Bombadils, offers gorgeous harmonies.
While “Seventeen” explores young romance, “Twenty Years In” balances this with themes of mature, resilient love. The album truly takes off with “You’ve Got A Way” (featuring Ryan Cook), a track that invites you to sing along to its irresistible chorus. Stephen Fearing’s contribution to “East to West” is striking. Spencer’s soft voice leads the initial verse and chorus, but Fearing’s haunting presence elevates the song to an unexpected level, culminating in a powerful final chorus with Spencer. This seemingly odd pairing is the kind that defines an album.
There isn’t a dud on “Sunset.” Every track is purposeful and unforced, with Matt Andersen’s contribution being another highlight. I highly encourage you to set aside enough time to listen to it from start to finish. It is meant to be savoured, not devoured! Dim the lights, create your own “Sunset,” and let this album take you on a journey. You won’t regret it!
