Single Release: Ariel Posen (ft. City and Colour), “Empty-Handed”

Ariel Posen - Empty-Handed

In an age of fleeting trends and endless production layers, it’s rare to find music that rewards deep listening. Winnipeg’s Ariel Posen is an artist who consistently delivers that depth, and his latest single, “Empty-Handed,” is a masterclass in modern musicianship.

Having seen Posen live in Fredericton, I can attest to the raw power of his performance. His skillful guitar work, backed by a tight and dynamic band, creates a magical experience that studio compression can’t replicate. His new single, featuring City and Colour, successfully captures that energy while showcasing his sophisticated songwriting.

The three-song release offers a preview of his upcoming full-length album, “Bannatyne,” due March 20th. The title track, “Empty-Handed,” opens with a heavy, infectious baritone guitar riff, perfectly complemented by the backing vocals of City and Colour. The second track, “Vagabond,” hits even harder, with a chorus that powerfully captures a universal feeling of searching for belonging: “Where do we go? / If we’re all vagabonds.”

The final song, “Future Present Tense,” best illustrates the lasting quality of Posen’s music. It is a complex, layered track that reveals something new with every listen, yet remains as catchy as any radio hit.

If you’re looking for music that transcends the temporary “wow factor” and offers genuine substance, look no further. Ariel Posen’s “Empty-Handed” is a compelling preview of what promises to be an outstanding album. Give it a listen and mark your calendar for the release of “Bannatyne” next month.

Ollie LeBlanc, based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, discovered his love for music in his parents' basement with a box of classic rock LPs. A lifelong fan, his fascination with music has only grown over the past three decades as a musician. Ollie has worn many hats, including bassist, producer, engineer, and photographer. As he matures, his journey has become more about contributing to the musical community and sharing its richness. What better way to give back to the medium that has given him so much!
