New Single: Scott MacKay, “Half Of Everything”

Half of Everything

Listening to “Half of Everything,” the latest single from PEI singer-songwriter Scott MacKay, brought that kind of smile to my face that one gets when hearing something so truthfully silly that all you can do is laugh. I couldn’t help but recall memories from my own divorce while the song played, and yes, with a guilty smile, remembering some of absurdities my ex-husband and I put ourselves through many years ago.

MacKay brings a wonderful light-heartedness to how ridiculous a divorce can be when it comes down to splitting everything up that the couple has accumulated together. He even mentions splitting the dog. How absurd indeed! It’s easy to get a glimpse of Scott’s sense of humor while tapping along to the upbeat tune that the lyrics are set to. Even funnier is that he released this single just prior to Valentine’s Day.  I can only imagine that being solo is better than picking up the tail-end half of the dog though – Ha!

MacKay admits this song took a lot of time and energy to put together, as he is no stranger to putting his mind and his pen to work. Since the release of his 2015 “Twin” album, MacKay has been spending much of his time developing his writing skills. “This song did not pour out of me. Most don’t. The name Half of Everything came to me first, and I was instantly intrigued,” Scott describes. “After 21 pages and lots of umming and hmming, I finally had something I was happy with. Typically, I write without the guitar and with melody in mind; once the lyrics were finished, so was the song.”

Showing off the fruits of his labor in “Half of Everything,” it is obvious MacKay was very happy with the results.  Produced by Daniel Ledwell, even with a topic known to create heartache amongst many, this catchy tune is what I believe to be a musical reminder to us all not to take life too seriously. So give it a listen, tap your feet, and try and enjoy all the little pieces of life that make it great.
