Winnipeg-based rockers Mise en Scene have just released a video for their song “Waster,” from their recent album “Still Life on Fire.”
Mise en Scene’s breakout album, “Desire’s Despair” (Pipe & Hat, 2012), was a rallying call that got the female forces noticed, and more importantly, heard. Produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan & Sara), Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire) and Tony Berg (Beck), the album took them on a roller coaster of a career kick-off. It lived on the !earshot Top 50 national charts in Canada for weeks, received a 2014 Sirius XM Indies Award nomination, as well as touring across Canada, to infamous American music hubs such as SXSW, and to the prestigious Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Spain.
Now with “Still Life on Fire,” the group has released a project that CBC Music calls “one of the most compelling albums you’ll hear this year.” About their latest single, “Waster“, the band says: “This song is about how people waste your time. It’s about finding a connection and wrapping yourself around someone’s world, believing and supporting what that person says and what that person represents, only to be rejected and dismissed by them. Having the guts to put yourself out there in a relationship to find no glory (reiterated theme connection here to “Guts/Glory”). The song announces these people as “wasters” because they are a “waste of time” to your life and the bigger picture. The song also illuminates and reminds the listener that you “won’t miss this”, you won’t look back on your life missing the times you shared together with this person. The song encourages self respect and mutual respect in relationships, if that isn’t happening, those people are “wasters” and they waste your time, but don’t worry, you won’t miss that when you’re gone.”
