We recently enjoyed an online performance from Hamilton, ON soul-blues rocker, Terra Lightfoot, during the “Stay Home County Music & Arts Festival,” where we first heard “Paper Thin Walls,” her latest single that was formally released just last Friday. It’s hard to believe that it has been almost three years since Terra released her highly acclaimed “New Mistakes” album – one that I still believe pushed her guitar-driven music much more towards the mainstream (in a good way, as Terra deserves to be heard) – so both this new single and knowledge of her next album coming soon is some much needed good news right now.
Recorded in Memphis, TN at the legendary Royal Studios, Terra was joined by a trio of studio-session heavyweights during the recording of this new single: Davy Smith (bass), Lester Snell (keyboards) and Steve Potts (drums), and engineered by GRAMMY Award winning owner/producer Lawrence ‘Boo’ Mitchell (son of Willie Mitchell). If the single’s loping riff and easy groove suggests the makings of a summer anthem, it delivers a stinging lyric for all seasons. “My heart is the hole in the road / In the wilds of Ontario / You’re the wind lickin’ the window / Of a car just passing through,” Terra recites, opening the song in her own unmistakable (and much loved) vocal style, whilst giving her trusty guitar a good workout as we’ve come to expect.
“Paper thin walls / I heard you on the other side / When you’re done talking / Tell me who was wrong and who was right,” Terra delivers, accentuating each line of the chorus with a good, solid punch to the gut. “I wrote this song about overhearing someone you love sharing some harsh words,” she shares. “I’ve tried to modulate my reactions to things like that, strived to be calmer in my interactions even when I feel strongly.” “When you’re driving all your points so far home / Tell me who was right and who you done wrong / Who done you wrong.” “Paper Thin Walls is about having your heart run over by someone who never really comes through,” she adds.
To coincide with the single release, Terra also shares a music video for the song, directed by Mat Dunlap (Andy Shauf, Rose Cousins), and featuring previously unseen concert footage captured during the tail end of her “New Mistakes” album tour. Based on this initial teaser of new music, Terra demonstrates her ability to bottle the live magic she brings to the stage each and every time she performs, and unleashes the energy in this famous Memphis studio. Go ahead and circle October 16th on your calendars right now, as you won’t want to miss Terra’s fifth album to date, “Consider The Speed,” which shall be released through Hamilton’s own Sonic Unyon Records label.

The British guy that crossed the ocean and crash landed in central Pennsylvania (to quote Greg Keelor, “And I wonder what am I doing here?”). As the youngest of four siblings, exposure to music from a very early age nurtured my passion and appreciation for many musical genres. Continuing to discover some amazingly diverse and talented musicians based in Canada, I gravitate to live music experiences and remain devoted to spreading the word about such a vibrant music scene.
