We have not unlocked the GDW Video Vault for a few months now – and can’t even toss out lame excuses such as forgetting the combination or struggling to find a reliable safe cracker in the Yellow Pages. Truth be told, we simply ran out of editorial space on our posting calendar (high volume of year-end pieces, and a flying start to the new year through January) – which means the vault is bursting at the seams again. We’re loading them into the VCR right now – take a load off for a while and let these clips help kickstart your day.
Celeigh Cardinal, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”
In an age where attention spans continue to decline, we knew we needed to come out swinging – and what better than a cover of a vintage hit from Edmonton, AB artist Celeigh Cardinal? “Elton John’s music has always been a profound inspiration to me, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road captures such a raw, beautiful longing for authenticity and freedom,” Celeigh offers. “Covering it felt like paying tribute to his brilliance while connecting deeply with its timeless message.”
Jason Haywood & The Goldrush, “Slowly Disappear”
We first featured Moncton, NB singer-songwriter Jason Haywood last summer, and with this fresh release for 2025, he shares this contemplative ballad about a troubled soul looking for connection in the midst of a fraught relationship. “This song was written about the isolation we sometimes feel when we can’t connect with people, be it romantic, partners, friends or loved ones,” Jason recalls. “It is a search for answers, whether they be difficult or satisfying ones.”
Checkerboard Floors, “Well I Do”
It was back in late 2023 when we last heard from Hamilton, ON indie-rockers Checkerboard Floors – so finding this retro-cool tune in our email recently sure put smiles on our faces. Teasing this classic car junkie with a sweet ‘76 Olds Cutlass, the band deliver some fabulous riffs that ooze 80s Hollywood action flick soundtrack vibes. As observed in this clip, cranking up the car stereo is not an option, but I’m equally happy enjoying the sounds of that loping V8 cam and beautiful exhaust notes…
Rachel Croft, “A Mind Made Of Sky (This Too Shall Pass)”
London-based alt-rocker Rachel Croft continues to go from strength to strength, making it incredibly difficult to ignore her succession of single releases. For Rachel, this latest tune (a remarkable power ballad) was the catalyst for her same-titled 2024 debut EP. “The moment this song fell out of me, so did the entire of the EP,” she shares. “That’s why I feel this song feels so powerful, important and relevant as a voice of hope and comfort.” Eagerly awaiting Rachel to tour our shores…
The British guy that crossed the ocean and crash landed in central Pennsylvania (to quote Greg Keelor, “And I wonder what am I doing here?”). As the youngest of four siblings, exposure to music from a very early age nurtured my passion and appreciation for many musical genres. Continuing to discover some amazingly diverse and talented musicians based in Canada, I gravitate to live music experiences and remain devoted to spreading the word about such a vibrant music scene.
