Ellie Heath

Edmonton, AB indie-pop artist Ellie Heath earned her GDW debut feature today thanks to this tongue-in-cheek ditty that tickled my funny bone – a “line” that takes me back to a concert with The Dears last November, where vocalist Murray A. Lightburn took a pause to inform the room that releasing a new album and touring was very tiring. Cue an impression of Danny Glover, and the delivery of “that” famous line from the Lethal Weapon movie series.

Fast forward back to the present, you can see why a song titled “Too Old (For This Shit)” would immediately lead me back to that “Sgt. Murtaugh” reference. What Ellie does here, however, is take the statement and turn it around, adding a bouncy soundtrack and witty lyrics to create a playful “anthem that leans into the absurdity of aging without ever feeling like a grown-up.”

Co-written and produced alongside Hawksley Workman and Tristan Konkle (Tapes in Motion), here is a tune that “balances joyful, child-like production with a dry, deadpan vocal delivery that gently pokes fun at the seriousness we’re told to adopt with age.” I wonder what “Sgt. Riggs” would make of this…

The British guy that crossed the ocean and crash landed in central Pennsylvania (to quote Greg Keelor, “And I wonder what am I doing here?”). As the youngest of four siblings, exposure to music from a very early age nurtured my passion and appreciation for many musical genres. Continuing to discover some amazingly diverse and talented musicians based in Canada, I gravitate to live music experiences and remain devoted to spreading the word about such a vibrant music scene.
