Review: Red Cardinal, “Find Yourself” EP

Red Cardinal

In a world awash with noise and distraction, the quest to “Find Yourself” feels more vital than ever. The relentless barrage of advertisements—often louder than the music they interrupt—and the blinding promise of happiness on every billboard are constant reminders of society’s external pressures. The news cycle only amplifies the chaos. Yet, as the old saying goes, true happiness comes from within, and the journey starts by looking inward. That’s why Red Cardinal’s EP, aptly titled “Find Yourself,” immediately caught my attention.

Red Cardinal

From the first notes of the opening track, “The Moth,” the band’s Saint John, New Brunswick roots are palpable. The song’s brooding atmosphere and weighty presence might seem imposing at first—much like the city’s historic, weathered facades. But just as Saint John’s beauty reveals itself beyond its rugged exterior, “The Moth” invites listeners to shed the darkness of their past and embrace renewal. It’s a song about acknowledging where you’ve been, not denying it, and finding the courage to move forward.

The EP’s title track follows, anchored by frontman Corey Jellison’s poignant lyric: “The time we’re living in, I wish I could stand still.” It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply in an age where nostalgia often feels like an escape from a turbulent present. The band’s favorite, “Stranger Days,” continues this introspective journey, while “Flimsy” and a reimagined version of “Old Towns” round out the collection, each track offering its own shade of reflection and hope.

Red Cardinal

As someone proud to call Red Cardinal friends, I can attest that their bond goes far beyond music. While the lineup has evolved, the current roster—Jellison (vocals/guitar), Michael Bent (guitar), Andrew Parsons (bass), and Scott Almon (drums)—feels like the perfect fit. Great bands aren’t just about technical prowess; they’re about chemistry, trust, and the willingness to create together. Red Cardinal embodies this spirit, and in doing so, they truly have found themselves.

With “Find Yourself,” Red Cardinal delivers more than just an EP—they offer an invitation to self-discovery. I’m excited to see where their journey takes them next. Onward and upward!
