Essential New Releases: Rapid Fire Roundup

Essential New Releases

We found ourselves having to disable the ‘new email notification’ chime from the GDW inbox – because it’s worse than an overly sensitive smoke detector right now. New music requests and press releases continue to fly in thick and fast – and only a handful can get beyond the cursory glance. Here are four fresh cuts from some GDW faves that certainly grabbed my attention.

Jory Nash, “Bombs Away”

Full disclosure – this recent cut from Cobourg, ON artist (and good pal of GDW) Jory Nash has been victim of the repeat button since landing on my music radar. No excuses are needed to enjoy Jory’s music – but learning that he channeled some long-time love for The Zombies as inspiration for both the sound and ambience of this single, trust me, you cannot spin it just once.  Jory’s new “The Light Still Shines on the Main” album is out now.

Katherine Priddy, “Matches”

I am eternally grateful to a good pal in the UK who dropped Katherine’s name onto my listening radar a few years ago. The Birmingham, UK artist continues to create some amazing contemporary folk music, and this new tune is no exception. “[This is] a dark, smouldering anthem for the lost voices of the witch trials,” Katherine shared on her socials – and announced her next studio album, “These Frightening Machines,” coming in 2026.

Hyaenas, “Queer”

If you had told me that my favorite all-queer girl band from Vancouver were releasing a tune titled “Queer,” well, how could I politely tell you in return that you are talking garbage? No, not garbage per se, but Garbage – the US indie band fronted by Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson. Hyaenas have had this tune in their repertoire for a while but officially share their interpretation to tie in with the 30-year anniversary of the songs’ original release.

Duke & Goldie, “Small Town Talk”

British Columbia is a hot bed of fantastic new music releases right now – so we’re sticking around to enjoy this latest cut from Vancouver-based country duo Duke & Goldie. Featured on GDW back in early 2023, Eric ‘The Duke’ Duquette and Jena ‘Goldie’ Gogo once again channel plenty of vintage country cues with their signature modern twist – think Loretta-meets-Margo, and you’ll satisfy your retro-modern country cravings with this toe-tapper.

The British guy that crossed the ocean and crash landed in central Pennsylvania (to quote Greg Keelor, “And I wonder what am I doing here?”). As the youngest of four siblings, exposure to music from a very early age nurtured my passion and appreciation for many musical genres. Continuing to discover some amazingly diverse and talented musicians based in Canada, I gravitate to live music experiences and remain devoted to spreading the word about such a vibrant music scene.
