The upcoming release of Goldtop’s “You Possess Me” on 21 July marks the beginning of a new chapter in the musical careers of Alice Kos and Everett LaRoi. While both artists have significant solo experience under their belts, this first full-length release from their duo Goldtop heralds a very promising future.
The longstanding friendship between Kos and LaRoi became a full-blown collaboration by the time they officially joined forces in late 2012. It occurred in the wake of Kos’ solo album “You Missed It All” (produced by LaRoi) when, after a run of duo shows, the pair decided to fully explore writing songs together with the wide array of tools at their disposal. The results quickly laid the foundation for Goldtop’s avant folk-rock sound, which shifts between shadowy dream-pop, crunchy distorted rock and acoustic reverie.
The Edmonton-based pair has created an incredible debut – with the vicious guitars on “Rip It Off,” the moody electro-rock of “The Flood” and the Laurel Canyon-esque ballad “Even Tonight,” the album makes a powerful statement indeed.
