Review: Cayley Thomas, “How Else Can I Tell You?”

Cayley Thomas - How Else Can I Tell You

Having enjoyed “Blue Jean Baby,” a recent single from singer-songwriter, Cayley Thomas, I was excited at the opportunity to listen to her highly anticipated new EP, “How Else Can I Tell You?,” scheduled for release this coming Friday.  Upon my first listen of this album, my ears were met with the undeniable signature sound and unique arrangements that I’ve come to know and enjoy from this artist.  Recorded between her home in Edmonton, AB, and her current residence in Toronto, ON, and produced by Nik Kozub (The Wet Secrets) and Steven Chahley (Badge Epoque), this release offers a delightful mix of old and new sounds, which does not disappoint.

Included in this collection is her current single, “Two Minds,” released back on March 10th, and one that brings her lovely vocal range to this song whilst serenaded by a fanfare of trumpets.  I also stumbled across another instantly familiar tune, “Midnight Hours,” her previously released stand-alone single from last year, and a much welcomed inclusion here.  I am happy to see this single being featured on both SiriusXM’s Ones To Watch list, and earning several spins on the CBC, as Cayley definitely deserves to be heard by a much wider audience.  Having attended the inaugural singer-songwriter residency at The Banff Centre, performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and acted professionally in over 15 major productions, adding her presence on national radio is a well deserved addition to her resume in my humble opinion.

“In A While” is one of my favorite tracks from this new album.  With some muted sounds, and a little distance/echo in Cayley’s voice, what really stands out for me is how she appears to be right here in the living room with me, sharing this intimate moment; itself a great reflection of her own artistic nature and decision to record the album with a mix of Hi-Fi and Lo-Fi sound.  Another favorite track is “Sunshine,” in which Cayley injects a little 1960s vocal vibe to this sweet love song, complete with some breezy instrumentation and an added wonderful rock & roll twist at the end.

As we continue to abide by the current stay-at-home orders during this global pandemic, I’ve noticed a significant increase in social media activity by many of our favorite Canadian artists, Cayley included.  I highly recommend that you give her, and other favorites, a follow on these platforms, as you may stumble upon a fun and intimate live pop-up music event.  These are such a fun treat if you are lucky enough to be able to tune in.  “How Else I Can I Tell You?” is a stunning release from Cayley Thomas, who I hope to see pop-up online very soon and allow me the opportunity to enjoy some of these wonderful tracks live.
