Single Release: Rick Sparkes, “Presently Looking Back”

Rick Sparkes, “Presently Looking Back”

What defines a “summer song?” Is it the energetic pulse mirroring the steady flow of vacation highway traffic? Or perhaps it’s an opening guitar riff that instantly brings a smile to your face? Could it be the evocative power of lyrics featuring words like “echoes,” “hanging around,” and “winding road?” We all likely have our own personal definition. Some things are simply meant to be felt rather than articulated. And that brings us to the song that has officially kicked off my summer.

Rick Sparkes’ latest single, “Presently Looking Back,” released on June 20th, marks a notable shift. While much of his previous work featured his backing band, The Enablers, this track was co-written with New Brunswick’s Matt Boudreau and features an entirely different lineup of musicians. This collaboration emerged from the “Songwriter Sessions” at Music PEI’s 2025 Canadian Song Conference.

Listening to “Presently Looking Back” is akin to the feeling of walking two dogs that suddenly decide to run in opposite directions. The song radiates happiness, yet it possesses the power to evoke a lump in your throat – a feeling that could stem from regret, the fear of missing out, or the internal conflict of resisting change while knowing the best path lies ahead. There’s a poignant artistry in pairing the word “anymore,” often a symbol of an ending or loss, with the song’s sunniest, most uplifting guitar riff.

It’s a challenge to focus on both emotional currents simultaneously. Try listening to this track shortly after pulling out of your driveway on a road trip. Play it a few times before reaching your destination and notice how it “hits differently” with each listen. Much like its layered sonic landscape – a testament to the skilled musicianship of Sparkes, Boudreau, guitarist Colin Buchanan, and drummer Matt MacEachern – the song as a whole can be appreciated in numerous ways. It is at once simple and yet showcases remarkable depth and complexity.

Give “Presently Looking Back” serious consideration for your summer playlist. You won’t regret it. And one last thing… Don’t forget your sunglasses!
