“This Rut,” the latest single from Wise Child, is a bittersweet dream pop track carried by washy guitar and driving bass. Lead singer Jaya Bremer found inspiration for the song after a trip overseas: ”I had just returned home from a trip to Vietnam – I fell head over heels for the country – and the post-travel blues hit me hard. I went into hiding, wrote a lot of music, tried to get into running and contemplated what I was doing with my life.”
The new single is accompanied by a colorful music video, directed by Kingtide Films. Amongst the quirky aesthetic of the video, featuring tracksuits and skate parks, are shots of the Victoria’s hidden gems and beautiful aerial views. The video follows the arch of Bremer’s progression, “I guess we were playing around with really taking the lyrics very literally, and I really did get into running for a few months as I was trying to find new ways to motivate myself and stop being morose.”
The band will be following up “This Rut” with a full-length album this spring, entitled “Idle Hands.”
