Team GDW have arrived back in central PA following a fabulous road trip that took us through both ON and QC. With our Wednesday video features focusing on non-Canadian music throughout this month, it is self-explanatory as to why the GDW vault is practically bursting at the seams with new Canadian content. We’ve grabbed a few random clips here from some GDW faves to satisfy your mini-movie cravings for this week.
Joel Plaskett, “High Summer”
We love keeping tabs on the new tunes from Dartmouth, NS singer-songwriter Joel Plaskett, and at first glance, “High Summer” gives an impression of continuing from where his 2023 single “Hey Moon (A Campfire Song)” left off. With this new release, however, we discover instead a breezy laid-back affair, drizzled with a generous serving of melancholy as Joel offers hazy memories of ‘being lost in the woods,’ and a self-reflective exploration of looking back and to the future simultaneously.
Sadie Campbell, “Leave It All Behind”
This Vancouver, BC soul-roots rocker landed on our radar back in May, with the single “Second Chance” delighting the senses and making a strong case for GDW single of the year consideration. With this latest release, Sadie once again brings out an onslaught of goosebumps with her stirring vocal delivery and ear for a good tune. “Leaving the old parts of yourself behind can be hard, but it’s also the only way we progress,” she shares. “This song is my story about how it feels to start over.”
Les Hay Babies, “Soyez fiers”
We recently featured Moncton, NB folk-pop trio Les Hay Babies during our Francophone video posts during June and are excited to discover another release that shall appear on their upcoming fourth studio album. Translated as “Be Proud,” this music video perfectly captures their Acadian roots and love for family and food. “Our clip is the perspective of celebrating at our house, going on tour, working in the studio, and visiting our Louisiana cousins,” the trio recently shared.
Dennis Ellsworth, “Money Ramble”
It seems forever since we last featured Charlottetown, PE artist Dennis Ellsworth (December 2021 in fact, when GDW’s Richard discussed Ellsworth’s project, The Moneygoround) – so this perfectly timed inclusion today is a stripped-down performance for “Money Ramble,” filmed on location in his childhood hometown. “This is the second of four songs we shot…down on the beach at the end of Langley Road,” Dennis shares. “I used to sit on this beach in my youth…and watch the world go by.”
The British guy that crossed the ocean and crash landed in central Pennsylvania (to quote Greg Keelor, “And I wonder what am I doing here?”). As the youngest of four siblings, exposure to music from a very early age nurtured my passion and appreciation for many musical genres. Continuing to discover some amazingly diverse and talented musicians based in Canada, I gravitate to live music experiences and remain devoted to spreading the word about such a vibrant music scene.
