I first encountered Andrew Moore during last year’s Harvest Music Festival when we shared a bill at Fredericton’s Par 94 Bar and Golf Lounge. His trio, which includes bassist Jake Leger and drummer Jeremy Hebert, delivered a blazing set that left a strong impression on me. Despite the sparse attendance that night, they performed as if playing to thousands. Their professionalism was remarkable, and I was thrilled to learn that a new release was forthcoming. Andrew Moore’s “Bold Lies” EP was released on November 29th.
As I anticipated its release, one question lingered: Would the electrifying energy of their live performance translate to the recorded format? I believe it does! The key lies in a few interconnected aspects. First, the musicianship is impeccable. Seasoned musicians understand the importance of dynamics and space, polishing their arrangements before recording. They grasp the recording process and their own limitations, which leads to the second aspect: the music must not be overproduced. Overproduction can strip a track of its authenticity. It’s often better to record another take rather than to “fix” a subpar one. The Andrew Moore Trio excels in this regard.
My only gripe with this EP is that it contains just three songs. It feels reminiscent of old TV shows that leave you on a cliffhanger until the next episode airs. My favorite track is the second one, “Race Me, Julianne,” featuring incredible drumming by Jeremy Hebert. Moore’s inspired guitar work blends blues and rock, evoking memories of the greats. Not to be outdone, Jake Leger delivers a solid and creative bass performance. These three musicians are clearly meant to play together. Their chemistry shines as brightly on the recording as it does on stage. Give it a listen—you won’t be disappointed!
